Just like any other mid-twenties dude, I get hyped anytime I hear rumors of a new comic book movie being made. One of the things that I anticipate most is how the costume will be translated from a drawing to a wearable suit. Recently some photos were released of two comic heroes who will be hitting the sliver screen soon. One of those is of a hero that hasn’t been seen in a while at the theaters, Marvel’s Captain America. The other is receiving a fresh remake after a decent run of films that ended on a bit of a low note in Marvel’s Spider-Man. The costumes don’t look bad, but as I’m sure they would expect some people to feel, I do have my issues with the costumes.
Looking at the images of Captain America, it seems that they are trying to make his suit seem like a practical translation from what an actual soldier would use. Its easy to think they would add red, white, and blue to his uniform to make it an awesome patriotic costume, but it looks like they try to tie in the color scheme from his former uniform. In other words, make blue a part of his uniform before he becomes Captain America. A couple of problems are raised considering it makes no sense that this soldier would randomly wear a blue helmet with a star on it.
Now they may try to put something in the storyline to make it seem not so random that he is wearing a blue helmet, but nonetheless it just wouldn’t be smart to make yourself stand out from all the other soldiers when in battle. Just like Lt. Dan told Forest Gump not to salute him because then he would just be shot by a sniper just waiting to kill a commanding officer. If you wear a blue helmet out on the battlefield, you’re pretty much asking to be shot first. But lets forget about the color scheme for a bit and look at the actual material of the costume. I know the setting of his origin is WWII, but did they have to make his costume appear to be made of the same material all the other soldiers are wearing? He is supposed to be a super-soldier, the government couldn’t spring for more hi-tech gear than a paratrooper’s uniform with a new coat of paint? Even the bad guys in the background look slightly more futuristic. Not to mention his helmet seems to be on par with the original NFL leather helmets.
That last point brings me to my qualms with the Spider-Man outfit. I know it looks about the same if not better than the last Spidey suit we saw in the films with Tobey Maguire, and that suit looked pretty good. My issue with the suit is the exact opposite from my issue with the Captain America suit, its too hi-tech!
Where the heck is a kid going to find that kind of material to make a suit like this? What kind of material is that? I don’t have a problem with suits being hi-tech for example I have no issues with the new Batman suits. But its understood that Bruce Wayne has nearly unlimited resources to construct his suit. In fact I think the new Batman movies have shown best just how the hero came to have his suit. But how is a kid in high school going to come up with that suit? I understand he’s really really smart a genius (you’d have to be to come up with the web & web shooters) but how would he even finance a suit like that. I know you could ask the same about his web shooters, but chemicals and pieces of metal could cost considerably less than this super material that we’ve never even heard of. The only reason I give them a pass is because I don’t know how else you’d make his suit, without being really lame looking.
What do you think?
